The Forestry Commission offer fishing on a number of lochs and rivers in the area including; Loch Branden, Loch Dee, Black Loch, Loch of Lowes, Lillies Loch, Spectacle Loch, Garwachie, Loch Eldrig, Stroan Loch, Linfern Loch, Palnure Burn and Water of Minnock. Permits can be obtained from any Commission Visitor Centre or call the Recreation Ranger on 01671 402420 email lucy.hadley@forestry.gsi.gov.uk

Barscope Loch

in the grounds of Barscope Castle near Newton Stewart is a 20 acre loch which holds good stock of wild brown trout. Fishing from the bank or boat costs £5 to £10 per day for 4 fish. For permits call 01644 420294.

Black Loch

near Newton Stewart very close to the famous Grey Mares tail waterfall. 3 Lochs Estate have the fishing here, 4 boats, fly only fishing for rainbow trout which are stocked at about 2lbs to 8lbs, open all year. Permits cost £25 for a full day 3 fish and £20 for 8 hours 2 fish, catch and release is £15, prices include the boat and a life jacket, call 01988 830304.

Carsfad Loch

run by Dalry AA is a loch of some 110 acres stocked with rainbows and brown trout, fishing is on the west bank only, there are no boats. Any legal method allowed. Permits from the Post office in Dalry.

Earlstoun Loch

the fishing on this 180 acre loch is run by Dalry AA who stock with brown trout. Fishing is from boats only and cost £12 per day inclusive of the boat. Permits from Newtons Grocers in Dalry.

Lillies Loch

near Newton Stewart is run by Forest Enterprises. Fishing for brown trout from the bank, 6 fish limit. For permits call 01671 402420.

Lochenbreck Loch

near Gatehouse of Fleet is a clear water tree lined loch of about 20 acres stocked with rainbow and brown trout by Kirkcubright Angling Association. For permits call 01557 814217.

Mossdale Loch

rainbow trout fishing on Aird Estate, permits from the PO in Mossdale.

Mossrodrick Loch

near Castle Douglas is a 7 acre manmade loch stocked regularly with rainbows and brown trout fishing from boat and bank. Call 01644 430015.

Newton Stewart Angling Association Waters

The club has the fishing on a number of lochs in the area permits are £15 for 2 fish then catch and release, where bait fishing is allowed it is worm only, boats are available on several of the lochs. This club has made laudable efforts to improve access to persons with disabilities having specially designed a loch,

Wee Glenamour Loch

for wheelchair access. Vehicles can drive up to the loch side, there are platforms and bait fishing is permitted for person with disabilities, OAPs and juniors under 16.

Other loch are:

Bruntis Loch

rainbow trout and brown trout fishing on 2 lochs just off the A75 at Blackcraig. Fly only but juniors under 16 and OAPs can bait fish.

Clatteringshaw Loch

wild brown trout, all legal methods allowed. Located 5 miles west of New Galloway on the A712. Part of the Hydro scheme, 5 miles of shoreline with the north end being most productive.

Loch Dee

fly only for wild brown trout which can grow to specimen size. Located near Clatteringshaw Loch off the A712. Bank fishing only.

Fyntalloch Loch

stocked with triploid rainbows minimum 1.5lbs and holding good wild brown trout, fishing is fly only with bait in a designated area.

Loch Kirrieoch

wild brown trout fishing fly only to 1st of July. Located on the approach to Glentrool Village. The west bank is recommended.

Loch Ochiltree

triploid rainbow trout averaging 2lbs and wild brown trout.

Permits from Galloway Guns and Tackle, call 01671 403404 when the shop is closed you can get permits (except for Loch Dee and boats on Ochiltree Loch) from the Galloway Arms, call 01671 402653.

Queensberry Lochs

on the Drumlanrigg estate near Thornhill consist of 6 lochs; Morton Castle Loch, 8 acres stocked with rainbows and holding wild brown trout; Starburn, again stocked with rainbows and holding wild brown trout, day tickets for both cost £25 or £17.50 for an evening (price includes the boat); Slateburn, bank and boat for rainbows; Coldstream bank only for rainbows and wild brownies, costs £20 per day or £15 for an evening plus two new lochs Hillend loch and Farthingford

with rainbows (2 to 4lbs) and browns (av. 1lb), permits cost £20 per day and £15 for an evening session. Call 01848 600415. 

Loch Roan

a loch of over 10 acres just off the A 713 near Crossmichael run by Castle Douglas AA stocked with rainbows and brown trout. £15 per day for 4 fish fishing from a boat. permits from Tommy Sport in Castle Douglas, call 01556 502851.

Loch Struan

5 miles from New Galloway is a pretty loch with extensive weed beds and lily pads holding Perch, Pike and Brown trout. Permits from Forest Enterprise £3 to £5 call 01671 402420.
