Bank House Fishery, Catton neat Lancaster, 2.5 acre mill pool stocked with rainbows and browns from 2.2lbs to 20lbs plus tiger, blues and goldens. Fishery records are impressive with the biggest rainbows at 23lbs 4ozs, brown 16lb 8ozs, and tiger 10lbs 5ozs. Lots of corixa and stickle good fly life. Best flies, beaded flies for corixa and stickle feeders, Shipmans CDC, buzzers and sedges. A slow fished buzzer on a floating line is the hot tactic for rainbows. Call 01524 770412

Clegg Hall Trout Fishery, Dyehouse Lane, Rochdale, fishing on two lakes stocked regularly with some very big rainbows with the fishery record at 21.5ozs. Open all year except Xmas day the average rod catch per visit is 8 fish with many doubles being caught. Best flies are buzzers which work all year with damsels and pheasant tails fished on a floating line with a long leader as the water warms, dry black gnats and hoppers also do well. Permits cost £7.50 (2hrs) to £20 (8hrs) C&R and £12.50 (1 fish 2hrs) to £30 (3 fish, 8hrs) call 0782 704870

Lune, The Environment Agency offers fishing for salmon, sea trout and brown trout on three beats of the Lune two of which, Upper and Lower Halton are exclusively game fishing beats (Lower offers good fly fishing water). Permits are for day and night sessions 8 am to 8 pm and 8pm to 8 am cost £15 per session from Scarthwaite Country House Hotel, Caton, Lancs, call 01524 770267

High Stangerthwaite on the upper Lune has brown trout, salmon and sea trout fishing in the glorious setting of the upper river. Call Carlson Fishing tackle in Kendall for information on 01539 724867

Ribble Milton Fishery near Clitheroe fishing for salmon, sea trout and brown trout on this recovering river plus fishing on the rivers Calder and Hodden. Permits are for night and day sessions 8 'til 8 and cost £15 from the Milton Country House Hotel, call 01254 826544

Stocks Reservoir Fly Fishery, in the head of Hodden valley within the Forest of Bowland is the largest fishery in the North West at 350 acres with 4.5 miles of bank fishing. Open from 24th Feb to 30th Nov, 8am to dusk the fishery offers great fly fishing for own reared triploid rainbows, brown trout and blues. There are 20 boats all with outboards which cost £20 for two anglers. Permits cost £21.50 for 6 hours or 5 fish with a number of other options available including reductions for under 17 year olds. Leicestershire

Eyebrook Trout Fishery, near Caldicott is one of the top English fisheries. 400 acres and 5 miles of bank are available fishing this renowned top of the water fishery for rainbows, blues and native brown trout built in 1940, Eyebrook has matured well. There are 30 boats for hire and two wheelyboats. There are season tickets and day tickets available, a full day costs £18 for 8 fish which make Eyebrook great value for money. Boats cost £18 for two anglers and a wheelyboat costs £10. In the spring they recommend using nymphs like Dawl Bach, black epoxy buzzer as well as lures like tadpoles, cats whisker and Fritz. For the summer buzzers are the buzz, emerald green or ginger plus hoppers, daddies and emergers. In autumn there are large shoals of fry so go for minkies, zonkers and floating fry plus imitations for corixa and shrimp. For permits call 01536 770264

Thorton Reservoir near Thornton is a 70 acre fishery first opened in 1857. The lake has extensive shallows 4 to 8 feet deep from Thornton Arm to Lonesome Pine and is about 30 feet deep along Stones and Dam Wall. The season is 1st Feb to 18th November. The fishery catch average is excellent at 4.1 fish per angler. You can fish on 2 miles of bank, from one of 20 rowing boats (there are 3 electric engines for hire), wheely boat or a float tube. Prices are very reasonable at £15.50 for 4 fish then C&R with concessions for OAPs and disabled persons, juniors can fish free on an adults permit. Boats cost £10 per day plus £6 for an electric motor and wheelyboats with a motor cost £9.50. Buzzers, damsels, sedges and hoppers do well and there are large numbers of course fish which the trout prey on from August. Call 01530 230807 for bookings

Caister Fisheries, 4 ponds stocked with a wide range of course fish including Pond D which is designed for match fishing and Pond C which has a population of brown trout (put in to keep the bream fry in check).
