Derbyshire

 

Derbyshire and District Angling Club has a wide range of angling opportunities available including salmon and sea trout fishing, trout fishing on rivers and lakes and course fishing. The club has two rods for salmon and sea trout on the rivers Mawddach and Wnion near Dolgellau. They can boast to having 22 fishing locations for trout in rivers, lakes and reservoirs including beats on the rivers Dove, Manifold and Derbyshire Derwent where there are still good mayfly hatches. Derbyshire Railway Angling Club has fishing for members on the river Dove (3 beats including Lower Ellastone - brown trout and grayling with a few rainbows, some fish of specimen size; a half mile beat at Eaton Dovedale Farm and 2miles at Tutbury and Scropton Farm with has a few trout and some excellent chub and barbel). Derbyshire Wye the Peacock in Rowsley offers day tickets for fishing on 7 miles of the Wye which has a reputation as first class dry fly fishing water for wild rainbows (rainbows breed on the Wye) and brown trout. Call 01629 733518.

 

The River Dove, haunt of Walton and Cotton in Beresdale, a Mecca for anglers who love the history of our sport. The Charles Cotton Hotel in Hartington has access to some beats, call 01298 84229.

 

River Dove Wild brown trout and grayling in this famous limestone stream from the Izaak Walton Hotel who have 3 miles of fishing on the Staffordshire bank from IIam Rock to the junction with the Manifold river. Wet and dry fly allowed, ghillies available. the season in 2007 is 18th march to 7th October for trout and 16th June to the 14th of March 2008 for grayling. Syndicate membership costs £195 per year. Arnfield Fly Fishery reservoir fishing near Glossop, call 01475 856269.

 

Barlow Trout Fishery Dronfield on the B6051. 4 lakes stocked with brown trout and rainbows of 1 to 1.5lbs with fish up to double figures buzzing about plus fishing on the brook for wild brownies. Tickets cost £14 per day for 4 fish with catch and release allowed. Call 0114 2890543.

 

Disabled person symbolCarsington Water, 741 acre reservoir, fly only fishing for brown trout and the recently stocked rainbows. there are also 20 boats of which 8 have outboards and a wheely boat. There is about 2 miles of bank fishing available permits are £16.50 for a full day for 6 fish and £22 for a boat the wheely boat can be booked in advance at £10, call 01629 540748 for further information.

 

Derby Trout Fishery fishing on several stocked trout lakes near Idridgehay, Wirksworth, call 01629 822318.

 

Donkhill Fishery near Catton, 2 acre spring fed fishery stocked with rainbow trout averaging 2lbs, full day £22 half day £14, call 01827 383719.

 

Erwood Reservoir near Buxton is a deep reservoir of some 85 acres located in the uplands of the Debryshire Dales. Stream fed with peaty water the reservoir is stocked every month with rainbows and brown trout averaging 1.5lbs. Call 01625 525270.

 

Foremark Fishery reservoir reopened under new management in 2006 as a dedicated fly only fishery with 4 miles of bank fishing plus 20 boats. Stocked with triploid rainbows from 1lb to double figures. There is a wide range of permit options available including season and concessions, as a guide a full day cost £17 for 6 fish. Call 01283 703202 for further information and bookings. 

 

Ladybower, in Hope Valley, a beautifully naturalised reservoir near Sheffield offering bank and boat fishing for triploid rainbows and brown trout. Best Rainbow 17lbs 4ozs, best brownie 11lbs 7ozs. Ladybower is open from March to October only. There is a wide range of permits available including season, day and concessions, days cost £13, petrol boats £24 and for the energetic there are rowing boats at £12. Fishing is fly only. Lindholme Fishery a well stocked fishery near Doncaster call 01427 872905.

 

Ogston Reservoir a 200 acres reservoir of clear water set in woodland and open farmland. There lake is an amenity for several water sports and has an exceptional bird life. Wading is not allowed. The reservoir is stocked with rainbows and brown trout in the autumn to allow fish to over winter and mature. Call 01629 540696.

Tittesworth Reservoir near Leek call 01538 300389.

 

Willington Lake Trout Fishery near Derby is a 19 acres manmade lake with many bays and point giving it a bank extending to 1.25miles, the average depth is 3 to 4 metres. Spring fed the lake water is gin clear and supports an abundance of insect life including daphnia, corixa, shrimp and snails. A mayfly population has evolved in a short time with good hatches of buzzers and lake ilives. Buzzers, olives, GRHE, Dawl bach, and Montanas to well as do Mayflies and daddies in thier season. Permits are very resaonable at £10.50 for a sporting ticket (release 10 fish) up to £19 for 4 fish (release 6). Call 07792 791439.

Devon

 

Westcountry River Trust offer inexpensive access to 39 beats on the rivers of Cornwall and Devon using an online token system. Rivers include the Camel, Tamar, Taw, Torridge, Fal. Avon Dam near South Brent, 50 acre lake in open moor land holding wild brown trout. Fishing if free.

 

Burrator neat Yelverton, fishery operated by the Burrator and Siblyback Fly Fishing and Angling Association, fly only. Fishing for rainbows and catch and release for brown trout. Fenworthy near Chagford, bank fishing for wild brown trout, permits from a self service kiosk price £11 per day. Flies recommended Black Gnat, Invicta, Sedge.

 

Goodisford Mill Fishery, near Collompton, trout and course fishery (carp to 30lbs) stocked with triploid rainbows, browns and tiger trout raised from eggs on site. Stocked daily with fish of 1.5 - 2.5lbs with several double figure fish included. Best flies Pheasant tails, gold headed buzzers and anything yellow all fished on floating lines with a long leader. Kenwick near Bovet Tracy. Access is restricted to anglers only on this well stocked fishery holding Rainbow trout up to 8lbs. A wheelie boat is available giving 24 hours notice, call the ranger on 01647 277587. Permits from a self service kiosk. Best flies, buzzer, damsel, average bag 3.08 fish.

 

Dorset

 

Christchurch Angling Club offer day ticket fishing on the extensive holdings of course, trout, salmon, sea trout and grayling fisheries controlling beats on the river Avon (including the Somerley water), beats on the Stour and sea trout fishing in Christchurch Harbour. Salmon fishing at Somersley cost £30 per day, Christchurch Harbour £35 per annum, £17.50 per week and £5 per day, the Lower Stour costs £20 per week and £7.50 per day. Permits from many tackle shops in the area including: Avon Angling in Ringwood, Bournemouth Fishing Lodge, Christchurch Angling Centre, Top Floor Tackle Surplus Dorchester. Flowers Farm trout Fishery Hillfield near Dorchester. 5 spring fed lakes totalling 4.5 acres stocked with rainbows and brown trout, best rainbow 13lbs, tickets cost £25 for a day, advanced booking requires as the number of rods allowed is limited. Call 01300 341351.

 

River Frome

 

Dorchester Fishing Club offer limited access to their trout and grayling fishing on 7 miles of the Frome and half mile of the Cerne (45 tickets per season). Tuesdays, Thursdays, Saturdays and bank Holidays only, no day during the mayfly season, call John Alpin on 01305 266500 or 07889 680464.

 

Wessex Chalk Streams offers access to several beats on the Frome, Piddle and their carriers. Prices for the fishing varies dependent on the beat and the time of year, as a guide the range is from £35 per day to £70. Call 01305 808460.

 

Durham

 

Lakes

 

Wild brown trout fishing, on Cow Green, Selset and Balderhead.

 

Blackton, fly only fishery, permits as for Keilder, call 01833 641121.

 

Derwent Water, 40 years old this year Derwent Water just off the A68 near Consett will be stocked with 40,000 fish this year including some selected rainbow trout. For permits call 01207 255250, multi bait fishing available, permits cost from £15 for 4 fish to £25 for 12 fish with a range of concessions available.

 

Sharpley Waters near Seaham, now consists of 11 lakes stocked with rainbows, brown trout, blues and golden trout. Fishery record is 23lbs 2oz, good access for persons with disabilities. Permits cost £17 for a full day, 3 fish; £14 for a long half day, 2 fish and £9 for for hours 1 fish plus C & R after reaching your limit, sporting tickets cost £12 for a full day, call 0191 5818045 or email carolweightman@hotmail.com

Barnard Castle AC offer day and week tickets for their water, permits from the Tourist Information Centre in Barnard Castle, call 01833 6900999.

 

Raby Estate fly only fishing on the Estate water, day tickets available from the Estate Office or Raines Ironmoner in Middlteton in Teesdale.

 

Wear

 

Chester le Street AA have extensive fishing on the river for salmon and sea trout from the motorway bridge at Chester le Street up to Finchale Abbey. Fishing is for members and guests only but the membership costs just £60 per year (£7 for juniors). Call Geoff Curry on 0191 3887072.

 

Croxdale Ferryhill and District Angling Club offer fishing for salmon, sea trout, brown trout, grayling and course fish from  Croxdale to Spennymoor. Permits from the tackle shop in Ferryhill cost £35 for the season (the club has beats on the Tyne and Swale too), call 01740 652360.

 

Durham the City offers free fishing on two miles of the river for salmon, sea trout and brown trout (plus big chub, barbel and bream).

 

Durham City Angling Club have extensive fishing on the river including access to some other club waters. Beats owned by them include Cathedral and Prebends, Shincliffe Village, Shincliffe Hall, Maiden Castle, Brasside Complex. Membership of the club only costs £50 per annum, contact the membership secretary J Hepworth on 0191 3866000 or 07734004949.

 

Finchale Abbey Fishings two miles of fishing from one mile above to mile mile below the Abbey for salmon, sea trout, brown trout, grayling with some first class course fish available, good fly water. Permits cost £35 per season, £7 per day and £4 for juniors, call 0191 3866528.

 

Weardale Fly Fishers Club offer day tickets for their water from Stanhope Gauging Station to Rookhope Burn, permits from the Newsagents in Front Street Stanhope.
