Where to Fish in

RIVERS | LOCHS | RESERVOIRSA 3lb Don brown trout on the dry fly at Bridge of Alford

Scotland has been favoured with so much good trout fly fishing whether you find yourself fishing on the many thousands of Highland lochs containing tenacious trout or the many rivers. You will find that wild natural fishing abounds in Scotland, from the fertile rivers of the southern and central regions of Scotland to the craggy fast flowing streams of the Highlands. I building this directory I have found the trout of over thirty pounds have been taken recently from Loch Awe while the limestone lochs of Caithness and Durness produce prodigious bags of fit fighting fish. There is off course the river Don in Aberdeenshire which has to be one of the best trout rivers any where, with high single figure trout taken on the dry fly and nymph every year.

There are many little known gems to find where a day out fishing is combined with fantastic scenery, rare wildlife and historic locations. Not all of the fish are like the 3lb Don trout pictured to the left, you will find that wild trout fishing is not like that, many cracking fishing places to to go trout fishing will give you a memorable day catching fish that can run to 4 to the pound. They are eager and fight like fury and who know you may just find grand dad lurking nearby, anything can happen when you fish on the wild side.

There are so places to fish I am finding that it is no mean task, but lets see how many of the thousands of lochs I can find for you. Off course Scourie offers over 25,000 acres of fishing in countless lochs which helps ticks a few places on the list nicely. Starting on this page with the trout rivers of Scotland.

Clackmannan

River Devon this entry is for me very nostalgic for I fished the Devon many time up to my late teens and it was always very good to me. The fish are not big, a half pounder is a nice fish although I had a few up to a pound and one memorable 1.25lb fish. It is here that I learned to fish a down stream worm with a fly rod and a single split shot and here too that I honed my skills first with the wet fly then the dry. It is here that I found that some fences are best left alone when you're bare feet are in the water and your hands are wet, twas quite a shock. I also caught my first duck on the Devon whilst fishing the downstream worm, caught and released unharmed but none to happy. With the recovery of the lower river after years of pollution some salmon and sea trout can be taken below Rumbling Bridge which is an insurmountable barrier of rapids and falls. Permits cost £15 per season £6 per day (£3 per season and £2 per day for juniors) for brown trout and £25 per season £15 per day for salmon and sea trout (applications by post only for salmon tickets). Clyde

The Clyde rises in the borders hills near Moffat and offers exceptional trout and grayling fishing in gin clear water. The ongoing rehabilitation of the lower Clyde, which was until recently deplorably polluted, has made it possible for salmon and sea trout to re-establish themselves in this once prolific river.

As with all major rivers in Scotland the Clyde is covered by a Protection Order under the Fresh water and Fisheries Act. Because of the pollution problem the Clyde has become reknowned as a trout and  grayling water and the effect of the Protection Order has been to enhance access to fishing as there are few conflicts with salmon interests. Fishing permits are available along the length of the river from Angling Clubs, Post Offices, shops and hotels.

Dumfries and Galloway                                                                 Back to Top

Annan

The river Annan in the western borders of Scotland is an exceptionally accessible river with fishing for salmon, trout, sea trout, grayling and course fish available throughout its length. The river rises near Moffat and flows approximately 35 mile to Annan on the Solway Firth offering a full spectrum of fishing throughout the year. There is some spring fishing for salmon in the lower Beats in February, March and April followed by exceptional trout fishing through April to July with fish to over 5lb taken on the dry fly. From June to August there are sea trout and from September to November the main salmon fishing takes over. The Annan is a 'back end river' with the best runs in the Autumn. It is also a spate river so it is worth watching the weather when choosing to make a visit. The received advice is to check water levels before booking, the upper river can be falling and fishable even when the lower river is out of sorts (check out the SEPA website for river levels, see the home page). For bookings log on to www.riverannan.co.uk

Gaur

This river which flows from Loch Laidon on Rannoch Moor is the oddest thing. Dammed a few miles down from Rannoch station to form Loch Eigheacht, which is part of the massive Tay Hydro electric system, the river can rise and fall from the dam down stream at the whim of the generating station. The river rises several feet in short shift creating an artificial spate. Now when the river is running normally you can catch a basket load of small trout 3 or 4 to the pound, free rising and eager. Then the river rises and things change. A lasting memory was watching helplessly as a three pound fish, played out, lay out of reach in the swelling flood and my net was in the car! I lost the fish and still chew my gums fretting. Big fish from Loch Rannoch run the Gaur late in the season and many an angler has been shocked to the bottom of his welly boots by them.
